Bears, Beats, and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA!

Okay, I admit it…I’m a geek.

This really isn’t a new revelation. I’ve been a geek for a while, I just didn’t know that all this cool stuff existed for us (read: geeks). My parents are pretty run of the mill when it comes to trends. Both Beatles fans, Dad was a farmer so he’s pretty out-doorsy. Mom’s a teacher…sports fan…crafty. Dad likes westerns and Star Trek. Mom likes mysteries and comedies and old musicals.

I am a mix of both. I like sports, I don’t seek it out and I don’t play, but I keep track of my teams. I would love to go camping and hiking but end up spending more time in the kitchen. I LOVE Star Trek and all things “space-y”. I love old musicals and British mysteries.

I also happen to like really geeky/nerdy tv shows. I’ve been hearing about Battlestar Galactica for years now. I’ve been told my numerous people that I would like it. I took their words of wisdom and Holy Frak! if that isn’t a good show! Right now we are on Season 4 and even though I read through some spoilers… they didn’t prepare me for what was about to happen! I wish that the BF would get off the XBOX so I could watch some Netflix BG. He just got the new Black Ops game and can’t get enough. He got it Thursday and he’s already prestige-d.

Okay…so to go with the theme of the title… I’ll give you some bears and beats. YES! I know it’s suppose to be BEETS, but I’m not Doug Funnie so I’m going to use BEATS…as in music.

Bears… I collect bears…stuffed bears. All kinds of stuffed bears.

Beats….I can’t stop listening to Fiona Apple. Damn my sister for turning me on to her. I mean, I liked Criminal well enough, but it was my sister’s teenage angst that played her albums over and over again and now I can’t stop listening to her…for like the past week.

Also, if you haven’t checked out The Dudes yet, seriously, you’re YEARS behind…catch up. They are AWESOME!

Nova makes science cool.

This afternoon I just finished making lunch and brought it to the living room to eat with my honey. Nothing is better than a simple lunch and a good beer! YUM! He turned on PBS which was playing Nova. Nova was about space. It’s always about space.. it’s like The History Channel and WWII.

Maybe it was the beer, but my mind can’t comprehend the amount of space! They were describing light waves and how the other universes are moving away from us. So Crazy! I wish I could describe the feeling of trying to comprehend something so large.  The closest I can come is to say “heavy”. I get so interested in space and space travel and other galaxies, I wish I could understand it better. I would have liked to be an astronomer in another life, but all that math and discovering things….that’s just not me. I’m more of a cheerleader when it comes to that stuff. I’ll cheer on the people making the discoveries but that’s a lot of pressure.

Well, I wish there were more open dialog on this blog. I like to hear what your thoughts are on space or topics that completely blow your mind (in a good way, not crime or things like that).

perils of technology

I have a routine in the mornings. I’m not OCD, I’m ADD. If my routine gets interrupted or I can’t fulfill my normal routine, the rest of my day is usually off. It doesn’t upset me a whole lot, but I do enjoy having something I can control. I KNOW that when I get up in the morning that I can have coffee and relax for an hour before the work prep gets going.

Normally I do the dishes from the night before, make coffee, listen to NPR, make breakfast, then sit down to watch something on Netflix streaming from the XBOX 360. Sometimes, I spend that relaxing hour on the computer checking Ravelry or Facebook. And SOMETIMES, you are lucky enough that I have been inspired to write a blog! 🙂

Well, today I got most of my routine in, dishes, coffee, breakfast…. then I sat down to watch some Vicar of Dibley but when I went to sign in to XBOX Live I get an update notice. We’ve started having problems with the BOX not reading discs. This is particularly bad timing because my sister is in town today and she is DYING to play Beatles Rockband. I haven’t told her yet that we may not be able to play… We’ll leave that for later. She’s been having such a good birthday, I didn’t feel like ruining it for her too soon. PLUS, we may be able to get it fixed this week.

Well…. back to my story, I decided to do the update (I hate doing anything like that without his permission because I’m afraid of doing something to ruin it for good, but this time is different). So, I select “Update” and sit back to eat my cereal and drink my coffee and pleasantly looking forward to some wonderful British humor when suddenly a box pops up that shows the progress of the download and it shows 33 minutes.

33 minutes, I thought. Okay, I won’t be able to watch the Vicar but MAYBE it will fix the disc reading thing. Fingers crossed! Then I think, okay, 33 minutes, now, is this real time or Microsoft time. Then just as I finish my thought, the download time jumps to 44 minutes.

Yup, Microsoft time. DAMN.

thinking thoughts

First off, I think we have all calmed down from our mis-adventure at the Embassy Suites. It was strange to have someone come up to a group of knitters and crocheters and ask us to leave. It was kind of funny cuz most people/businesses welcome us. There are a crap load of knitters in Chicago and it brings in business. Oh well, now we have a funny story to tell and it makes us look like a bunch of unruly gang members.

I’ve been working on my first serious blocking. I’ve  been putting it off because I don’t have a blocking board but I don’t think I can wait to get one. I found this blog where she describes her blocking board and I think I’m going to try that. It looks relatively easy and cheap. Plus I don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to ship it. I’m hoping I can find homoste at Menard’s. I’ll post pictures when I can figure out which slot and drive I can use for my memory card.

On to other things…

I’m so confused with this Jihad Jane thing. Apparently there were a couple of guys who were planning a terrorist attack on some cartoonist in Europe too. I don’t understand. The only conclusion I can come to is that these people are down right crazy! I’ve watched South Park make Jesus gay and sleep with the Devil and I don’t want to kill those guys. I feel that God has tougher skin than that. In fact, if you have another god than I do, wouldn’t you think that being that he/she/it IS INDEED a higher being and has all this power, WHY would they care what people say about them? I think that gods of all types would have tougher skin than that. These gods have been through many wars and defamations… some cartoonist in Europe isn’t going to hurt their feelings. I would think they would care more about the believers worshiping than those who are defaming their being. I don’t claim to be a theologist, and these people have a right to be angry (don’t want to tell anyone how to feel here), but honestly, murder and terrorist attacks aren’t going to bring people to your side! Well, not in today’s standards. Maybe at some point violence was used….okay, I know it was used, but things change. But, my point is that I’m pretty sure that MY God doesn’t sit in his throne and cry because Matt Stone and Trey Parker defamed him in South Park. I also know that it isn’t MY job to judge them. That will come in time. End point, gods have tougher skins than we do.

Subject Change…

I have never watched American Psycho. I LOVE Netflix for delivering it to me for me to watch this weekend! Last weekend I saw Memento for the first time. WOW! I was a little disappointed with the ending but it was good none the less. If you’ve seen it then you know what I mean….if you haven’t, add it to your que NOW! Totally worth it!

I’ve talked enough…off to have my coffee and watch some movies! 🙂

So, last night was the season premier of LOST. I was so geeked about it. After last season I decided to do internet searches to learn more about the statue and Egyptian gods. I found more than I bargained for. Did you know that they built dummy sites to support props in the show? There is a website dedicated to some author of a book in the show.. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t exist because when I went to amazon.com, the book had no LOC number and you couldn’t order it…even in the marketplace. Weird, huh?

Have you ever heard of Geo Cache-ing? It’s where you get the coordinates to a location, then use your GPS to find it. When you find the spot, normally there is a box, waterproof, that will hold tokens from the other people that have been there. Normally, you take a token, ie, a keychain or rubber ball, or a finger puppet and place it in the box then take one that you fancy. The people of LOST created a Geo Cache. It’s in Washington State! CRAZY! I wish I could go find it. I bet it’s neat. The first one to find it got a Dharma token. NEAT!

Anyway, my excitement over last night’s premier was kinda rained on. Got some stuff going on with the boy that needs some attention. It usually works out in the end, but I’m nervous about this one. Hell, I’m nervous about all of them.. I hate talking about my feelings because they never seem validated. I don’t think anyone has ever told me… you’re right to feel that way. It’s always been, That’s a silly way to feel (only not in those words) or I don’t say that or I think it’s all in your head.

Needless to say, last nights’ premier was a bit dampened. I have however spent a good part of the day….well, not really….in the Ravelry LOST forum exchanging ideas and theories. It’s been fun and interesting.

Dream a little dream

Sometimes I hate nights. The other night was one of those. I woke up with dull but painful intestinal pains around 1am. I tried to go back to sleep but had fitful dreams. It’s funny when you dream and your subconscious inserts faces of people you may or may not know. In this instance, I just met this girl and here she is in my dream.

I was working for the government in a building full of research materials. I head to the bathroom (probably because I was having pain in my dreams as well). As I was sitting there this girl comes into the bathroom and goes into the stall next to me. Suddenly, I see her head by my feet. She is wearing a knit hat(surprise, surprise) and she starts slithering like a snake in front of me licking the floor. I realize that she is sick, probably cancer. She is completely out of it. She comes to and tells me that she’s sorry and that she’s very sick and needs help. I tell her that I will call an ambulance and she tells me no. So I run about this huge building and its campus in shoes that are half a size too big for me looking for help. Everyone I ask for help turns me down. It sucked. I wanted so badly to help this girl and no one is kind enough to help her out.

I woke up then. I was watching PBS American Experience or something. It’s a great series about all the presidents. They give you a pretty indepth look too. That night was Nixon. I guess my body doesn’t like Nixon. I slept fine when I watched FDR and LBJ. Man, I’m such a nerd.

Forcing myself

I can’t think of anything to write today, but part of changing myself is forcing myself to do things even when I don’t feel like it.

Oh, did I mention? For two weeks I’m going to try an experiment. I will exercise every day and I’m going to try the Special K Challenge.  I will start next Tuesday. Mostly because I left all my Special K stuff at work and that is where I spend the majority of my time. Since next Monday is a holiday for me, I’ll start Tuesday.  Since I have moved to Chicago, I have gained 20 lbs. I would like to lose that. I want to fit in my sexy jeans. I want my boyfriend to lust after me again.

Okay, on to something a little more up beat.

Has anyone out there been watching Dexter? What about Weeds? LOST? These are just a few shows that I have been watching. I’ve started watching Heroes. I’m starting with Season 4 because that’s what Hulu has on their website right now. I would like to stream season 1 but the boy needs to download a plugin and I won’t do that without his consent. The last thing I need is to wreck his lively-hood. We had our XBOX 360 streaming Netflix but the wireless antenna that he bought doesn’t catch the signal when it’s placed on the shelf under the TV.

Have I mentioned that I LOVE Hulu and Netflix? I don’t need cable with those. I pay $14.95 a month and can stream Netflix any time and any where as much as I want. Who wants to pay $99 a month for AT&T (I HATE THAT COMPANY) when Hulu and Netflix are just as good. PLUS you get WAY more movies.

Well, I gotta eat some breakfast and head to work.
